Rocky Point cottages were built for summer

Many of the houses close to the water in Rocky Point started out as summer cottages. Over the years people added heat and built onto them so they could live there all year. That history shows up the minute you start cleaning. The old wood floors often have gaps where fine sand settles. Where a newer addition meets the original house there's usually a seam, and dust collects along it. We treat the old part of the house and the new part as separate jobs, because they are.

The beaches here sit below tall bluffs, and all summer the sand comes home on feet and beach towels. It works down into rug fibers and grout lines, and a quick vacuum only takes the top layer. Sand's also hard on floors. Left under a chair leg or in a hallway runner, it grinds at a wood finish every time someone walks across it. We vacuum rugs slowly in both directions and pull sand out of floor edges and doorways before any floor gets washed.

Houses that face the Sound take the wind straight off the water, and it leaves a salty film on the glass. Windows can look dirty again soon after a quick wipe, because the salt got smeared around instead of lifted off. We wash that film off and dry the glass properly. Nancy Melius, a customer of ours, wrote that Suave was "particularly communicative and attentive to ensuring our windows were clean". Closets near the water can smell damp too, so we open them up and wipe the shelves.

Wooded lots bring pollen and dust inside

Head south from the water and Rocky Point changes. The lots get bigger and the houses tend to be newer. Many of them sit under tall oaks and pines, with the pine barrens just beyond. The shade is welcome in July. The catch comes every spring, when a coat of yellow pollen settles on every deck and window screen. A lot of it ends up inside, carried in on shoes and blown through open windows.

Pollen looks like dust, but it's harder to get rid of. A dry cloth pushes it around, and a ceiling fan blows it right back down. It packs into window screens and the tracks of sliding doors, and once it gets damp it turns into a yellow paste. We wipe it up with damp cloths and work from the high ledges down, so nothing falls on a floor we already cleaned. Sills and door tracks get cleaned at every window we touch, since that's where it hides.

Houses back in the woods are mostly lived in all year, and that's where regular cleaning pays off. A busy house gathers dirt at a steady pace, and a weekly visit keeps it from getting ahead of you. Recurring service is part of what we do, and so is a spring cleaning once the pollen settles down. Chris Ewan, who has used us for many years, wrote that Suave "Always asks for special instructions and his crew are very timely and friendly".

Renovations and move outs need deeper cleaning

When an older Rocky Point cottage gets a new bedroom or a wall taken out, the contractors leave fine drywall dust behind. It sits on every flat surface, even the tops of door frames and the inside of cabinets. A quick clean just pushes that dust from room to room. Post construction cleaning is one of our specialties, so we start at the ceilings and light fixtures and work down until the dust is gone. Ian Hantman, whose house we cleaned after construction, wrote that our crew helped "make our home still feel brand new".

Selling a house or handing the keys to a new tenant means someone else will open every cabinet. A move out clean covers the places a weekly clean skips. That means the inside of the oven and fridge, and the baseboards that sat behind furniture for years. Once the rooms are empty, the dust lines along the walls show. Closets and drawers get wiped out inside too. Sasha Wade wrote that we "left the entire home very clean for the purchaser."

If your Rocky Point house is a summer rental or a weekend house, it runs on a different schedule. A rental has to be cleaned from scratch between guests, and the next group notices sand in the sheets or hair in a shower drain right away. We clean before and after each rental stay, and we can stock supplies and food before someone arrives.
