Many Mastic homes started as summer cottages

A lot of Mastic was built for summer use. Small cottages went up on narrow lots. Over the decades, owners winterized them and built on, usually out the back or up under a raised roof. Walk through a house like that and you can often spot where the old cottage ends. The flooring and the ceiling height both change at the same doorway. That matters for cleaning. Each part of the house was built from different materials, and each part wears in its own way.

The older rooms are where we slow down. Worn wood floors get a damp mop, never a soaking, because water that sits in the seams can lift the boards. Old window tracks hold sand that a quick wipe just pushes around, so we vacuum them out before we wash. Baseboard heaters collect dust behind their fins. If nobody clears it, you smell it burning off when the heat comes on in the fall.

Additions and newer houses bring a different set of jobs. They tend to have tiled bathrooms with glass shower doors, and kitchens with stainless appliances that show every fingerprint. Soap film builds up on the glass until the door looks cloudy. Stainless gets wiped with the grain, which keeps it from streaking. In a house that mixes old and new, we plan the visit around the rooms that take longest, so nothing gets rushed at the end.

Pollen and damp air reach Mastic homes

Mastic has plenty of oak and pine, and in late spring those trees drop pollen on everything. You see it as a yellow film on cars and decks. It also blows in through screens and open doors, then settles on window sills and the tops of cabinets. Wiping it dry just spreads it around, so we use damp cloths and change them often. That is a big part of a spring cleaning in Mastic: getting the film off hard surfaces before it works into rugs and upholstery.

Summer brings humid air, and houses on the streets nearest the Forge River feel it most. Damp settles in bathrooms with weak exhaust fans and in closets built against outside walls. That is where mildew starts, as gray specks on grout or a musty smell in a coat closet. We clean those spots and tell you what we found. A smell that comes back soon after a cleaning usually points to moisture the cleaning cannot fix.

In winter, sand and road salt come in on boots. On a small lot the walk from the driveway to the door is short, so most of it ends up on the entry floor. Salt leaves a white haze on tile and wood, and if it stays there it wears down the finish. A quick sweep does not take it off. After a snowy stretch, the entry and the stairs are where we start, with a proper wash.

We get Mastic houses ready for move-in

Selling a Mastic house means the cleaning has to fit between the last box going out and the new owner walking in. That is a different job from a regular visit. With the rooms empty, every mark on a wall and every dusty corner shows. We clean inside the cabinets and closets and wash the floors where furniture sat for years. Sasha Wade said in a Google review that the crew "left the entire home very clean for the purchaser."

Rental homes in Mastic need that same reset every time a tenant or guest leaves. We do pre and post rental cleans and cleans between stays. The goal is a house ready for whoever arrives next, without the owner having to be there. Gilda Turano has us look after her short term rental. When an older Mastic house gets opened up and rebuilt, the dust does not stay in the room where the work happened. Fine drywall dust drifts into vents and cabinets and keeps settling after the contractors leave. Post construction cleaning is a specialty of ours, and it takes more than a quick pass. We work from the ceiling down, then go back over the surfaces where dust has landed again.
