Deep cleaning reaches what weekly cleaning skips

A regular cleaning keeps up with the surfaces you touch every day. A deep clean goes after what has been piling up behind them for months. That means the tops of door frames, the grooves in baseboards, the blades of ceiling fans and the tracks under sliding doors. You usually know it is time when the house has just been cleaned and still does not look finished. The dirt has moved into places a quick pass never reaches.

We work from the top of each room down. Ceiling fans and light fixtures come first, because whatever sits on them falls onto everything below. Walls and trim are next, wiped by hand along with switch plates and door handles. Then the kitchen and bathroom surfaces get scrubbed. Floors come last, edges and corners before the open floor. Clean in any other order and you end up doing the same surface twice, or leaving dust on a floor you just finished.

At the end of a good deep clean, you can run a finger along the top of a door frame and come away clean. The base of the kitchen faucet is free of the soap and water spots that build up there first. Soap film is off the shower glass, and the corners of the floor match the middle. That is what customers notice. Beach sand and salt air settle indoors

Hampton Bays sits on Shinnecock Bay with the ocean beaches just across the water, and plenty of that sand ends up inside. Sand comes home on feet and beach bags. It settles into the seams of wood floors and the tracks of sliding doors, and it collects at the back of every closet. A vacuum on the open floor picks up what is loose. The sand packed into floor seams and door tracks stays put until someone works it out with a crevice tool and a damp cloth.

Salt air leaves its own film. On windows that face the water it builds into a haze that makes clean glass look dull, and it gathers on the sills. Inside, the damp air makes dust stick to painted trim and beadboard instead of sitting loose on top. A dry duster just pushes it around. Painted wood needs a damp cloth and then a dry one, so the surface comes clean without soaking the finish.

Summer humidity adds one more layer. Bathrooms in older cottages often have a small window and a weak exhaust fan. Moisture sits on the grout and on the caulk around the tub. Left alone, that turns into dark mildew spots that come back after every quick wipe. A deep clean scrubs those lines down and leaves them dry. If the caulk itself has turned black inside, we will tell you, because no amount of scrubbing fixes that.

Older cottages and shingle houses hold dust

Much of the housing around Hampton Bays and East Quogue is wood framed, from cedar shingle houses to summer cottages that have stood for decades. Wood interiors have more edges than plain painted drywall. Beadboard walls and paneled doors are full of grooves where dust lines up and stays. Those grooves are why a quick dusting never makes an older house look clean. Each one has to be wiped out along its whole length.

Older floors need their own care. Wide pine and oak boards have gaps between them that fill with sand and grit. A finish that has worn thin does not handle standing water well. We vacuum the seams first. Then we clean with a damp mop wrung out hard, so water does not sit in the cracks and swell the boards. A floor soaked with a wet mop can dry cloudy and rough, and that is hard to undo.

The larger newer homes bring different work. Many have double height living rooms and whole walls of glass. Dust and cobwebs collect up high where nobody looks, and a tall ceiling fan throws that dust across the room every time it turns on. We note those high spots during the estimate so the right ladder or extension pole comes with us. Skip the high work and a deep clean looks dusty again within a week.

Winter leaves a shut house dusty

Many houses in Hampton Bays and East Quogue sit closed from fall until late spring. A shut house does not stay clean. Dust drifts down from the heating system and settles evenly on every flat surface, and dead insects pile up on the window sills. Closets and stored linens pick up a stale smell. Opening that house for the season takes more than a regular cleaning, because nothing has been touched in months.

Spring brings its own mess. In Flanders and Manorville, close to the Pine Barrens, yellow pine pollen coats window screens and sills, then tracks inside on every shoe. Pollen smears if you wipe it wet first. It has to be vacuumed or dusted off dry, and then the surface gets washed. Do it the other way around and you spread a yellow film across the sill that takes twice as long to get off.

Summer on the East End means guests. A long weekend with a full house, or one party on the deck, leaves spills on the floors and handprints on every glass door. The kitchen takes the worst of it, with grease on the stovetop and hood and sticky cabinet pulls. Thomas Fallen called us for a deep clean after having guests, and he wrote that the crew "showed up ready to go."

A clean after a party follows the same top down order, with more time spent in the kitchen and bathrooms. Rings from glasses come off tables and counters. Couches and rugs get vacuumed for crumbs and sand. Bathroom floors get scrubbed along the edges and behind the toilet, where a busy weekend leaves the most behind. Skip those spots and the house smells like the party for days, even when it looks tidy.
