Shirley homes are mostly older ranches

Shirley is named for the developer who laid out much of it in the years after the war. A lot of what went up then is still here. Ranches and capes on modest lots, set close together on quiet side streets. Most of them have been added onto since, so a house that started small now has a bigger kitchen or an extra bedroom tucked in the back.

Those additions change how a house cleans. The original rooms and the newer ones often have different floors, like old vinyl in the kitchen and laminate in the den. Each floor needs its own cleaning solution. Older kitchens and baths also have more grout and more trim, and that's where grease and soap scum settle. A quick wipe misses it. A deep clean gets into those lines and corners and lifts it out.

Many Shirley raised ranches have a lower level that sits partly below ground. The air down there stays damp through the summer, so dust sticks to the baseboards and mildew spots show up on the bathroom ceiling. We clean the lower level as carefully as the main floor. If mildew keeps coming back in the same corner, we'll point it out, since that usually means moisture that cleaning alone won't fix.

Salt air and Smith Point sand come inside

Shirley's on the south shore, and much of the hamlet is a short drive from the bay. Salt in the air leaves a film on windows and sliding doors. It builds up fastest on the side of the house that faces the water. Glass that looked clear in spring can look hazy by August. We clean the windows and wipe down the frames and sills, where the grit collects.

In summer, a lot of families in Shirley drive over the bridge to Smith Point for the beach, and the sand comes home in the car. It ends up in the tracks of the sliding door and at the bottom of every shower. Sand is hard on floors. Each time someone walks over it, it scratches the finish on wood and laminate. We vacuum the tracks and edges first and clean the floors after, so a mop never drags grit across the room.

Away from the water, much of Shirley is shaded by pine and oak. In spring those trees drop pollen, and it leaves a yellow film on decks and porch furniture. It comes inside on shoes and through open windows, then settles on every flat surface. That's why a spring cleaning pays off here. We wipe down the sills and ledges and dust the fan blades and light fixtures, which is where the yellow dust sits longest.

Shirley move-outs and renovations need a deep clean

When a Shirley house goes on the market, the buyer's walk-through is the last look they get before closing. An empty house shows every scuff and dusty corner. With the furniture gone, we clean the baseboards and outlets it was hiding. We wipe out the cabinets and closets and get the floor under the fridge if it can be pulled out. In a Google review, Sasha Wade wrote that we "left the entire home very clean for the purchaser."

Older houses like these get renovated a lot, whether it's a new kitchen or a bathroom taken down to the studs. Construction dust is fine enough to drift into rooms nobody worked in, onto shelves and into closed cabinets. A regular cleaning just pushes it around. After construction we work from the ceiling down, so dust from the fixtures and ledges lands on floors we haven't cleaned yet. Ian Hantman wrote that after construction, our crew helped "make our home still feel brand new".
