Mastic Beach started as summer cottages

Mastic Beach began as a summer colony on the bay, and a lot of the houses still show it. Small bungalows sit close together on narrow lots, and many were built for warm weather and closed up every fall. Over the years most of them were winterized and lived in all year, with rooms added on and kitchens redone. That history is still there inside the walls, and it changes how we clean these houses.

Small cottages have more corners than you would expect. Plenty of them still have wood paneling and closets tucked under a sloped ceiling, and dust settles into both. Paneling holds grime in its grooves, and a quick pass with a dry cloth only moves it around. We take our time on these houses and work from the top down, so nothing we knock loose lands on a floor we already did.

Newer houses are mixed in as well, from capes and ranches to homes rebuilt after the storms. Those are simpler to clean but usually bigger, with open kitchens and more bathrooms. Whatever the house, we start by hearing what matters most to you. Bay air keeps these houses damp

Mastic Beach sits low and close to the water, with Narrow Bay along its south side and salt marsh along much of the shore. Air off the bay is wet and salty, and in July and August the humidity hardly lets up. Houses here stay damper than houses farther inland, and you notice it the moment you open a closet that has been shut for a week.

The damp shows up in the bathroom first. Grout goes dark, then the caulk around the tub turns spotty. Left alone, the same growth moves on to window frames and the back walls of closets. We scrub the grout and caulk lines, and we wipe down the frames where condensation collects on cold mornings. If a caulk line is past cleaning and needs replacing, we tell you so it can be redone.

Salt is the other problem. It leaves a film on windows and glass sliders that face the water, and the glass looks hazy in the sun even when the room is clean. Sand comes in too, on shoes and towels from Smith Point and the bay beaches, and it packs into door tracks and under rugs. We clean the glass and clear the tracks, because a slider full of grit is hard to open and wears out sooner.

Many houses here were raised or rebuilt

When Hurricane Sandy came through, bay water flooded large parts of Mastic Beach. Afterward a lot of houses were lifted onto new foundations, and others were gutted or torn down and built again. Many older cottages have been redone since then as well. Every job like that leaves a fine dust behind, and it keeps drifting out of vents and cabinets for weeks after the contractor has gone.

Post construction cleaning is one of our specialties. Construction dust is finer than ordinary house dust, and a regular clean tends to spread it around rather than lift it. We vacuum before we wipe, go inside cabinets and drawers, dust the light fixtures, and leave the floors for last. A customer who had construction done called the crew "such a skilled group of cleaners".

Houses here change hands, and some are rented out for the summer. We do move out cleans for sellers and move in cleans before the new owner's furniture arrives. A seller on a tight schedule wrote that the crew "left the entire home very clean for the purchaser". For rental owners we clean between guests. Another customer wrote: "They service my short term rental property and I trust them to take care of everything in my absence."
