A sign in the middle of Ridge calls it the Gateway to the Pine Barrens. Most of the houses here were built on lots cut out of those woods. You mostly see ranches and capes set back from the road, with newer colonials on some streets. The trees stand close to the house on almost every lot. That shade is nice in July. It also means pine needles and pollen find their way inside, and they settle on sills and floors near the doors.

Late spring is the messy stretch in Ridge. The pines release their pollen, and a yellow dust settles on every deck and window screen in town. It blows in through open windows and comes in on shoes. Inside, it sits in the tracks of sliding doors and on top of ceiling fans. A dry cloth just pushes it around. So the sills and tracks get a damp wipe, and the vents and screens get vacuumed before anything wet touches them.

The ground in Ridge is mostly sand, which is why the pines do so well here. Sand does not stay outside. It gets carried in on shoes and dog paws and builds up under the entry rugs.
